Creative Tenaim

holding hands

This is God’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.
(Psalm 118:23)

May the Author of creation

Grant a good name and duration

To the covenant and foundation

entered into by us—

the groom, ______________, son of _________ and ________,

and the bride, ______________, daughter of _________ and ________.

God willing, our wedding will take place on the ____ day of _____ in the year ___corresponding to the Jewish date of the __ day of ___ in the year ___, in _____, ____.

Whereas our lives have been dedicated to spiritual pursuits and Tikkun Olam, the healing of the world; and

Whereas the relationship between loving companions, as a microcosm of human experience, has been recognized by the sages as a fundamental arena for spiritual pursuits and Tikkun Olam; and

Whereas marriage can serve as an opportunity to work toward bringing healing to unhealthy patterns that can emerge between men and women;

Therefore, with unabashed idealism, yet with a sober recognition of the complexity of human life, we make the following intentions and commitments to each other:

To learn to love more fully—for the sake of each other, our loved ones, our communities, humanity as a whole, and, ultimately, for the sake of God. We commit to generously express our love and gratitude to each other;
To support each other’s Godseeking and spiritual practices, without insisting that our modes of searching and practicing be the same;
To continually learn and grow from and with each other toward greater awareness of self and other, in the spirit of listening, exploring, and not knowing;
To cultivate our life as a unit, a couple, and a family even as we are engaged in our separate endeavors;
To grow in our awareness of how our native cultures and languages shape our behaviors, and to strive to make our lives an expression of the best that our respective cultures have to offer;
To participate in the unfolding history of the State of Israel, with all its glory and heartbreak, and to maintain deep connections with its land and peoples;
To proactively take care of our mental and physical health and strive to live in wholesome alignment with the environment;
To engage in all financial matters with fairness, responsibility, and mutual respect, knowing that we each contribute to our partnership in many ways and affirming that money is not our bottom line;
To be a loving part of the blessings and struggles of our families, acknowledging that our families are the greater context for our marriage;
To continue to nourish and be nourished by our friends, acknowledging the joy and enrichment we derive from friendship;
To continue immersing ourselves in the depth and beauty of our inherited tradition, recognizing that Judaism has always included the exploration of rich new paths;
To respond to the suffering in the world through the quality of our relationships, as well as through the ways we invest our money, time, and energy.

And everything is valid and confirmed

העושה מעשה בראשית,

אנחנו –

מודיעים בזאת על כוונתנו להינשא, בע”ה, ב________________.

היות שחיי שנינו מוקדשים מזה עשרות שנים להתפתחות רוחנית ולתיקון עולם;

היות שהיחסים בין רעים אהובים הוכרו על-ידי חז”ל כבחינה של החוויה האנושית וכמישור הבסיסי ביותר להתפתחות רוחנית ולתיקון עולם;

והיות שנישואין עשויים להוות הזדמנות לרפא דפוסי התנהגות לא בריאים שעלולים להופיע בין גברים לנשים;

לכן, מונעים מחד על ידי אידיאליזם נועז ומאידך על-ידי הכרה במורכבותם של חיי אנוש, אנחנו מכריזים בזאת על כוונותינו ומחויבויותינו בדבר הקשר בינינו:

ללמוד לאהוב באופן שלם ומלא יותר – למעננו, למען אהובינו, למען קהילותינו, למען האנושות כולה, ובסופו של דבר, למען אלוהים. אנחנו מחויבים לבטא את אהבתנו ואת תודתנו זה לזו, ברוחב לב וללא מעצורים;

לתמוך זה בזו בחיפוש הרוחני ובעבודת הלב, מבלי לעמוד על כך שאופני החיפוש והעבודה שלנו יהיו זהים;

ללמוד ולהתפתח בהתמדה למען מודעות עמוקה יותר של האני ושל האחר, ברוח של הקשבה, חקירה ואי-ידיעה;

לטפח את חיינו כיחידה אחת, זוג ומשפחה, גם בזמן שאנחנו שקועים בעיסוקינו הנפרדים;

להגביר את מודעותנו לאופנים שבהם התרבויות והשפות השונות שבתוכן גדלנו מעצבות את דפוסי התנהגותנו. להביע בחיינו את המיטב שתרבויותינו השונות מעניקות לנו;

לקחת חלק בהיסטוריה המתפתחת של מדינת ישראל, על כל התפארת ושברון הלב הכרוכים בכך, ולשמור על קשר הדוק עם אדמתה ועם עמיה;

לטפל באופן פעיל בבריאותנו הנפשית, הגופנית והסביבתית;

להתנהל בעניינינו הכספיים בהגינות, באחריות ובכבוד הדדי, תוך הכרה בכך שכל אחד מאתנו תורם לשותפות בינינו בדרכים מגוונות ומתוך הסכמה בינינו שכסף אינו השורה התחתונה;

להשתתף באהבה בכל השמחות והמאבקים של משפחותינו, שהן חלק בלתי נפרד מחיינו כזוג נשוי;

להעמיק את קשרינו עם חברינו האהובים, תוך הכרת תודה על השמחה וההעשרה שזכינו לה כתוצאה מהיחסים עימם;

להמשיך ולחקור את העומקים הנפלאים של מסורתנו, מבלי שנשכח שהיהדות השכילה מאז ומתמיד להעשיר את עצמה מהטוב שבמסורות ידע אחרות;

להגיב לסבל בעולם באמצעות איכות היחסים הבין-אישיים שלנו ובאמצעות האופן שבו אנו משקיעים את זמננו, את כספנו ואת מרצנו.

והכול שריר וקיים.
