Although we often think of Shabbat and holidays as the essence of the Jewish calendar, in fact, these days take up a relatively small, albeit important, part of our lives. Nonetheless much of our life is lived on the rest of the days of the year. Judaism, of necessity, must inform all the days of our lives, not only the special ones which we set aside. Every day we have opportunities both large and small to “lift up sparks,” to find the holy in the mundane – in the food we eat, the words we say, the business we transact, the charity we give, and much more.
