Chanukah is the holiday which celebrates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem following its conquest by the Syrians in 165 BCE. The holiday is celebrated by lighting candles on each of 8 nights in a hanukiah or menorah. Other customs include the eating of latkes (potato pancakes), sufganiot (jelly donuts), or cheese dishes, playing dreidl (a gambling game with a top), and, in America today, gift giving.
