Outside of the traditional practices of mourning, mourners often confront more ordinary tasks – dealing with the will, dividing up possessions, closing the deceased’s home, teaching the surviving spouse to balance a checkbook, shop for groceries, or drive the family car. Although tradition prescribes no ritual for these tasks, they are often laden with emotion. Some mourners have begun to create new rituals to mark these milestones.
