Parts of the Seder
By Serene Victor
We sing the complete order of the Seder using a different melody each time we move on to a new section. We then recite the order, stopping after the name of the new section is spoken. This keeps the Seder moving and we all know where we are – and when we are going to eat.
We have been somewhat creative on the choice of melodies to fit within the meaning of the Seder. We even occasionally use the traditional tune.
Here are some melodies, for the complete order of the Seder, we have used in the past:
- Kadesh – "Shalom Aleichem"
- Urchatz – "This is the way we wash our hands"
- Karpas – "It's a Gift to be Simple", from Appalachian Spring or "Take Me
Out to the Ballgame" - Yachatz – "Go Down Moses"
- Maggid – Theme from Jeopardy. Honoring the Four Questions
- Rochtza – "Mayyim"
- Motzi Matzah – "Adir Hu"
- Maror – "We Shall Overcome"
- Korech - "Pomp and Circumstance" or "Adon Olam"
- Shulchan Orech – "America the Beautiful"
- Tsafun – "Hava Nagila"
- Barech - "Amazing Grace"
- Hallel – "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's Ninth
- Nirtzah – "Hatikva"
